Located in central China, Hubei is named after its location north
of the Dongting Lake in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
The total area is 185,900 square kilometers. Hubei Province abuts
on Anhui Province in the east, touches Jiangxi and Hunan provinces
in the south and lies next to Chongqing in the west. Its northwestern
neighbor is Shanxi and Henan Province is to the north. Wuhan is
the biggest city in Central China.
Telecommunication industry is booming fast in Hubei Province. In
2001, the total business revenue in the sector amounted to 14.405
billion, a 23.5% increase over the previous year. The total length
of optical cable trunk lines jumped to 11,026 kilometers. New subscribers
in the year numbered 958,000, which makes the total number of local
users soared to 6.389 million. This year also witnessed an increase
of 2.009 million in the new users, making the total number of users
up to 4.26 million. The fixed telephone exchange capacity was 7.528
million, an increase of 349,000 sets. Mobile capacity grew by 2.917
million and amounted to 7.69 million in total. In 2001, Hubei Mobile
Co. Ltd had over 1 million users, an increase of 814,000 users over
the previous year. The diffusion rate of telephone across the province
is 17.85 sets per 100 people. There are 21,000 data telecommunication
users, and 1.03 million internet subscribers. The Digital Hubei
Project has been in full swing.
