On the afternoon of 29th January, 2002, Wu Jichuan, Minister
of Information Industry, inspected Hangzhou Futong Group for its
optical fiber prefabricated rods. Wu spoke highly of the breakthrough
technology that Futong made and thus broke the monopoly held by
the foreign countries in the optical telecommunication field.
The minister was received at the Yinhu Facility by Chen Daxin,
director of Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Information
Industry, Guo Taihong, CPC Fuyang Committee secretary, Wang Jianyi,
president of Futong Group, a director from Japan Showa Electric
Wire & Cable Co., Ltd, Futong CEO Qu Caikang, Director Liu
Zhijun, and Xiao Wei.
Accompanied by Wang Jianyi and his colleagues, the Minister visited
the facilities for making the rod and optical fiber and cable.
Wu inquired after the processes. Engineers concerned reported
the general situations of the production lines.
At a report meeting after the workshop visit, Wang Jianyi made
a detailed report to the minister on the research and development
of the optical fiber prefabricated rod and corporate culture construction.
Learning that Futong succeeded in breaking the bottleneck two
years before the deadline they had promised Secretary-General
Jiang Zemin, Wu Jichuan congratulated Futong on that brilliant
achievement.
Wu Jichuan said he visited Futong mainly for the purpose of seeing
how the optical fiber prefabricated rod was produced because,
as a professional engaged in information industry, he was very
interested in the technology. He was very excited and pleased
while in the workshop witnessing the advanced technology, pleased
and excited because the successful development of the rod at Futong
changed the field landscape in China. Wu noted that viewed from
the state industry development strategy, the rod developed and
produced by Futong was a remarkable achievement and had solved
a big problem in the growth of China's optical communication industry.
Wu pointed out that the trend of all-optical network is unquestionable
for that industry's future. If we had been able to produce the
rod or we could make the rod core only, we would have to import
the casing, which would subject us to foreign control. In the
chain of optical fiber industry, 70% of the cost goes to the optical
fiber prefabricated rod. Now China consumes 20-30 million kilometers
of optical fiber per year, which constitutes a big demand. He
hoped that Futong would expand on the present foundation and further
satisfy the domestic and international demands. Competitive power
comes from scale. The ministry would be very willing to provide
coordination if it is needed in the process of expansion.
Wu Jichuan spoke highly of Futong's commitment to cultivating
the corporate culture in the spirit of the times, putting the
thought of "Three Representatives" to practice and aiming
to be an enterprise of "Five Models". He said that the
Three Representatives is an important thought, best reflecting
the essence of historical materialism and dialectical materialism,
and the theory of seeking truth from facts in this period of the
21st century. The objective of a business is to develop productivity
and the ownership system should not be a barrier to the development
of the productivity. Wu hoped that Futong would score greater
achievements now with the space for further development.
Wang Jianyi promised Wu Jichuan that Futong would make efforts
to start anew and live up to the expectation of the minister.
Minister Wu Jichuan wrote an inscription for Futong at the end
of the report meeting.
